Renovating and reinvigorating a large flat and patio terrace in a historic building in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter was a rigorous process. To bring maximum functionality and modern comforts to a property that dates back to 1769, while respecting its history, involved working closely with technical architects, structural engineers and the architectural heritage department of the city council.
This 200 sqm 4-bedroom home balances private spaces and common family areas. This continues into the design of its 50 sqm patio terrace, which is inspired by the Mediterranean outdoor lifestyle. Divided into two versatile areas, an open lounge with mixed seating and a pergola-covered dining area, it makes the most of local materials. Predominantly native plants plus neutral-tone ceramics from nearby potteries create a natural and authentic ‘lived-in’ look and feel.
